Following the release of new single ‘Fantasy Romantasy’ on Friday (August 7th), CLOSEUP Promotions chat with art rock quartet SPQR for this week’s Artist Spotlight.

SPQR! It’s great to have a chat! We love your music as you well know. We’re keen to know about your live shows, what does a live show usually bring?

It is great to have a chat! I’m glad you love our music because I love our music too.

Our live shows usually involve the four of us dressed like a bastard Daz advert, rocking out until we’re told to fuck off. There’s also a lot of sweat which is due to the fact that we’re all tragically unfit.

What part of the musical process do you enjoy most, and why? is it performing live, creating your tracks or..?

I can only speak from my perspective; but for me, you can’t beat when we’re playing together live as an ensemble. Whether it’s at rehearsal or at a gig, I just love It- especially when we’re super-tight.

Your tunes have been listened to hundreds of thousands of times across the world as Spotify informs us; Spotify is now such a big player in the industry, how important do you think it is for acts?

I think Spotify is a great platform for artists to get their music out there. Virtually everyone has it, and if you’re lucky enough to have one of your tracks on a big playlist then it can really help you develop your fan-base.

I’ve got to say though; I’m not a huge fan of the rate at which they pay artists per stream. I think a platform of its size could definitely offer more to ensure artists have a better chance of making a decent amount of money from the music they’ve devoted most of their lives to. That’s not an unpopular opinion, but I thought it’d be worth mentioning.

If you created a SPQR festival, and could pick three headliners, who would you go for?!

SPQR would headline the Friday. Then on Saturday, SPQR would headline. Then on the Sunday, to finish the festival off, I think it’d be really nice to have Hall & Oates. That’d really make my dreams come true.

Tell us a little about what your new music, when should we be expecting it?!

I’m a big fan of the music we’re working on at the moment. No weird ambient shit yet – so that’s good. Pete’s really flexed his throbbing song-writing muscle on these songs. I can’t wait for them to be unplugged from the Matrix, and unleashed into the real world.

Hmmmm, when should you be expecting it? Soon? I suppose?!
