Cultures create shimmering alt rock with pop sensibilities

Alternative rock trio Cultures are rapidly building momentum with their new single ‘Marlone’ as the Manchester trio their strongest work to date.

Despite having been a regular fixture on stages across their native North West for almost five years, it wasn’t until the addition of most recent drummer James Saunders that things really fell into place.

It’s ironic, given that Josh Spivey (Guitar/Vocals) and Tom Deegan (Bass/Vocals) are yet to gig with Saunders as their double Covid-19 postponed show will finally take place on October 22nd at The Bread Shed in Manchester – tickets here

Musically, Cultures have never felt tighter. The three-piece offer an intelligent and idiosyncratic brand of indie rock of shimmering synth lines and soaring guitars. ‘Marlone’ takes it up a notch having successfully balanced the band’s more solemn side against their pop sensibilities and shows just exactly where Cultures are at today.

“‘Marlone’ is a track we’ve had for a few years in terms of the chords and lyrics but it’s changed a lot since we first wrote it” explains frontman Josh Spivey. “Some parts of the lyrics, like ‘take time to decide who you want to be’, came about after a breakup I went through.

“I still don’t really know whether they were aimed at myself or the other person! I wanted to write a song that felt big and uplifting, while at the same time making sure the lyrics were true to how I felt when the song was written.

“We like to call Marlone our happy song about being unhappy and we hope that it makes people feel whatever way they need to when they listen to it.”
