Modern Age Music Song of the Day: The Jackobins – ‘Pour Le Mérite’

The Jackobins have returned after a two-year hiatus. The Liverpool band have crashed back onto the scene with commanding and emotion-fuelled anthem ‘Pour Le Mérite’.

The track is impressively layered and crafted, each aspect playing a part in creating a truly powerful track which builds into a formidable finale.

The band have suggested that the release is written as the anchor song for the wider themes that the band will explore in 2020, the “predominant ones being toxic masculinity, with militaristic aesthetics representing this”.

They explained: “’Pour Le Mérite’ is about the devastation that male hubris can bring to bear on the world, and how the mindsets and madness that we thought we had left behind in the past are once more growing stronger as seen through the resurgence of hard right politics and a reintroduction to the mainstream, of nationalism, sexism and racism.”
