BLOXX release punchy new single ‘Lie Out Loud’

Bloxx - Lie Out Loud

The alternative indie pop quartet BLOXX are based in London, however, their new drummer Joe grew up in North Devon. Wanting to keep it local to me, I checked out the latest singles off their new album ‘Lie out Loud’ (expected for August this year). With the title track being part of Annie Mac’s future sounds, there’s a buzz around BLOXX.

BLOXX were made for the great British festival, they were born for your summer playlist. Experts in crafting sing-along anthems, the band have been making serious waves on the indie circuit – supporting kings of the genre: Sundara Karma, The Wombats and have just finished a tour with Twin Atlantic. Without putting the band in a cuffed dickies and beanie box, BLOXX is a melting pot of all your favourite acts.

The title track ‘Lie out Loud’ is the album opener, immediately punchy with the guitar echoing Ophelia’s melody, you can almost hear the crowd chanting the riff. The ‘Brianstorm’ drums stamp the track with an almost MGMT bounce. BLOXX can seriously play. Levelling up the band, just another reason why they stand so prominent among the latest indie wave.

My favourite of the three singles released so far is ‘Coming up Short’, letting the bass hang low, giving the track an instant groove. Paired with sci-fi ripples from the synth, this is made for dancing and drinking in a field with your mates. My stand out moment is the vocals during the chorus, ‘want to be yours’  fades out and flutters over the wall of noise, giving me Ellie Rowsell vibes. At the breakdown, the use of synth guitar effects gives another dimension to the song. The sparkly guitar twangs are like glitter, reflecting the atmosphere the track has steadily built up. Could be straight off of sticky fingers ‘Yours to Keep’.

BLOXX have well and truly established themselves in this genre, they’ve found a sound and mastered it to perfection. However, with the rest of the tracks on the album, I hope they find a niche. There is so much potential within this four-piece, but I’m just craving that spark. They have the personality, they have the flair,  but I still think they’re holding back. I hope to find heavier, rockier tracks buried within the album. ‘Go out with you’ teases us with a grungier sound but fingers crossed they experiment, and dip a toe into Dream Wife and Spring King territory. BLOXX’s new album ‘Lie out Loud out’ is here 14th of august 2020.
